History and Overview of the Method
The Cornell Method, developed by Walter Pauk, consists of dividing the paper into three section: the note-taking system (on the right), the question/key column on the left, and a summary section at the bottom.
Notes during lecture is taken in the “Note” section and should only highlight key ideas. Questions or key words used during the lecture are put on the left hand side. After the lecture is over, a brief summary should be written in the bottom section.
When reviewing the notes, students should cover the “Note” section and answer the key words or Questions written on the left hand side.
Studies on Effectiveness
Wichita State University conducted a study in 2008 that compared two note-taking methods in an English classroom and found that the Cornell Note-Taking System may be useful for areas that require application of learned knowledge whereas the typical guided note-taking is better for recall.
